Did You Know - Learning about hearing loss and hearing aids
  • Over 40 million Americans currently suffer from hearing impairment
  • Only 20% of the hearing impaired are currently wearing hearing aids.
  • Over 60% of the hearing impaired have never had a medical examination to find out why their hearing is impaired.
  • Of those who do get an audiological exam, 70% do not receive a comprehensive Audiological exam.
  • One study has shown that over 80% of hearing impaired persons who receive proper and regular professional care are successful hearing aid users.
  • Almost 30% of the people over 65 years of age have a hearing disorder. This rises to almost 40% for those over 75 years of age.
  • Tinnitus (ringing or noise in the ears or head) plagues 17% of the general population, 30% of whom do not have hearing loss.
  • Tinnitus retraining therapy offers the highest success rate (840/c) of any available tinnitus treatment.
  • Recent research shows that a significant percentage of those of adults with diabetes who also go on to develop sensorineural hearing loss, have a specific mitochondrial defect. The association between diabetes mellitus hearing loss and mitochondrial mutations have been confirmed. Audiologists need to be part of the evaluation and periodic monitoring of diabetic patients.
  • Performing vestibular assessment on patients with balance disorders and vestibular rehabilitation programs for these patients is a service which ASA provides.
